My Shining Knight
Chapter 4
Lucifer found sleep came to him much easier here. Upon arising he had felt more refreshed than he had in days. All that running around and speaking to the generals was tiring. He hated to admit it, but he did have physical limits. Not to mention that the ride here was not particularly smooth and easy. The storm had died down and the day seemed to be just a normal gray. “Sir, give me the time,” Lucifer demanded of the guard at the desk. “You slept long. It’s about 2 in the afternoon. How are you feeling?” Drat! That was longer than he had intended. “I am still sore from my fall.” “I called in the nurse and she said she’d take a look at it if you want.” Lucifer hesitated before answering. He looked to his ankle. It was purple and green in some places and about twice its normal size. “That might be wise.” “So, where do you live? Do you have any relatives nearby? Anyone we can call, young man?” Young man? Lucifer quickly felt his face. Of course! He must look as young as one of the students. This guard probably suspected that he was so. An alibi came to mind that would not be too difficult to pull off. “I was thrown out of my home. No use calling my relatives, if you could call them that. I was looking for one of my friends, I’m pretty sure he goes here.” “Trouble at home then? Would you like us to file a report…er…Lucifer?” the guard asked warily. Lucifer shook his head. “Call me, Luki if you are uncomfortable using my real name,” he smiled darkly. The guard nodded with approval. “Very well. We can secure you a safe-house for a couple of days until things settle down at home for you. Or if you change your mind, you can file a report and we can relocate you to foster care.” “That won’t be necessary. Once I talk to my friend, I will have a place to stay for awhile. Thank you, Sir.” The guard looked sympathetic and shook his head. “What’s your friend’s name?” “Antoine DeRose or try looking up Sebastien DeRose,” Lucifer answered. After a few minutes of typing on the computer the guard muttered, “They aren’t students but they are here. Strange. Well, there are two gentlemen by those names, but they are not students here. They are staying with Father Andrew at the monastery. Must be some of his friends from his missions. I’m going to call the school nurse for you now.” Lucifer set his head back down, not tired but knew well enough not to move.
The school nurse declared it a bad sprain. She bound it up and braced it. Lucifer was given a set of crutches to use. The school allowed him to rest in one of the empty dorms for two nights until his situation was settled. Finally alone for a private moment, Lucifer stripped out of his armour down to his linen tunic. He pulled back his long silver-white hair into a messy ponytail. He considered his visage in a small mirror. Lucifer ran his fingers along his long pointed ears. They twitched upon contact. These would stand out too much. Luckily his hair had been long enough to cover them, but it was straining on his muscles to keep them pressed flat against his head. Ears normally stuck out parallel to the ground at a little over three inches. He finished preening for a moment and tapped at the elf-stone on his amour. It twinkled a bit. The signal had been sent. Now the Baron would know that his assassin was in place. Lucifer pried the elf-stone off the armor and enclosed it in his hands. It grew warm with energy. He needed an illusion to hide his ears. They needed to look round and small, just like human ears. Another glance in the mirror revealed the success of his illusion. Sebastien and Antoine may still recognize him but no one would suspect a thing. No one would believe that there was an elf on campus. Lucifer hobbled to the bed and elevated his foot. First things first, this injury had to heal.
It was torture. His mind had never felt so clouded and distracted. Sebastien wondered if he was becoming ill due to the stress. Food tasted bland. Classes, although wonderfully informative, were difficult to sit through. For some uncanny reason, he could only think of Brianna. She sat in the middle of the room while he sat in the far corner. He found his eyes spent more time on her than the board. Something was going wrong in his mind. She was just another girl. There were hundreds of girls just like her sitting throughout the classroom. Some, he would daresay, were more beautiful. Perhaps this was Antoine’s fault. His brother had been making it difficult to concentrate on anything else other than the girls. Yes. Perhaps spending more time with Cecilia would clear things up. Cecilia was not pretty and she was more of a man than a woman in his mind. She was opinionated, vocal, strong-willed and intelligent. Sebastien joined Cecilia in her next class. It was a math class. Cecilia sat near the front and Sebastien took his seat behind her. She was busy looking over the problems in the book. Sebastien was impressed that she was trying to read ahead. Someone like her would be good in Pravignon. By the end of class, Sebastien felt foolish about his previous praise for Cecilia. She was a twit with numbers. Cecilia was terribly embarrassed about her poor class performance. Her cheeks were flushed and she looked as if she were on the brink of tears. “I try really hard, but it’s just so frustrating,” she complained loudly. “It’s not as complicated as you think. Once you learn all the formulas and rules it’s quite simple,” Sebastien sighed as if it were such a trivial thing. Cecilia kept her eyes on her scuffed up, chunky shoes. “I just don’t have a head for numbers. Wait, how do you know this level of math? They didn’t have much more than geometry in the Middle Ages!” “According to the books I have read, this complicated math began in times more ancient than I can reckon. Whatever B.C. means.” “Before Christ.” “Thank you. As I was saying, the methods haven’t changed since then. All it takes is some memory.” “Perhaps you can help me with some of these problems,” Cecilia suggested in a voice so quiet Sebastien barely caught what she had said. “I don’t know if it’s worth my time. There are too many other things I have to deal with right now.” “I don’t really know anyone else who could help me. Brianna has just as much trouble as I do and I’m pretty sure Antoine can’t count past what he can count on his fingers.” Sebastien shrugged, “Ask your teacher for help. That’s what they do.” Cecilia frowned and nodded, “Fine. See you later then.” She quickly walked off. Sebastien felt irritable. And he thought so highly of her. Of course, she could not help being what she was…a woman. Sebastien had had enough of classes for the day and retreated to the library.
“Brianna…you don’t think I’m an idiot, do you?” Cecilia sniffled. “No! How could you say that? You are way smarter than I am,” Brianna replied. Cecilia shook her head. Of course, Brianna would say that. But she did want to hear that. “Thanks. But…oh never mind…it’s just stupid.” “What? Did something happen in class?” “Seb was in class with me. But afterwards, he was really…I dunno…cross or something. He just made me feel like I was an idiot. Just because I have problems with Pre-Calc. And I thought he kind of liked me, but I guess that’s silly.” Cecilia forced a laugh. “It’s not silly. I’m sure it’s something else that’s bothering him.” “I even asked him for help and he refused me,” Cecilia said. “Maybe he doesn’t even know it,” Brianna shrugged. “He knows it all right. I’m just inferior or something.” “Well, we can find you a tutor for the math final. Someone besides the knights.” “That’d be great.”
“Sebastien? Why are you still here? You have to try this ice cream stuff, it’s great!” “Not now, Antoine. I’m a little busy.” “You’re always busy. Take a short break and eat something with us.” “I really don’t want to see those two women right now. They distract me,” Sebastien said scornfully. Antoine frowned for a moment then grinned impishly. “Oh-ho! I see what’s going on now. And you were saying not to get involved. Oh, Sebastien, you are too much.” “What are you babbling about, buffoon?” “You…have what the other students call a “crush”. You have the hots for those two don’t you?” “Speak plainly. I don’t have the patience to translate your idiocy right now.” Antoine bear hugged Sebastien from behind, hoisting his younger twin off his chair. “You have taken a fancy to our hostesses, you sly rogue. Here I thought you were hiding behind those books because you don’t like me. You’re so shy. It’s cute.” “Get…your…hands off me…or so help me I’ll LET Lucifer kill you. And be glad of it.” “Oh that’s not fair now. You just want to be king,” Antoine teased, releasing his brother. “I do not.” “You do not what?” “I do NOT want to be king and I do NOT have feelings towards our hostesses,” Sebastien stated firmly. “Uh-huh…hey, you want ice cream right? Come on, come on, come on! It’s really good and you’ll really going to like it.” “If I have some will you leave me alone for the rest of the night?” “Promise!” Antoine said with his hand over his heart. With an exasperated sigh, Sebastien closed his books for the night and followed Antoine to the commons.
Antoine was right about one thing. The ice cream was very good and he did enjoy it, but he was not about to let Antoine have the pleasure of being right for once. Cecilia did not join them, but Brianna was more than happy to. “She’s working on homework right now.” “Seb was doing homework, but I got him to come,” Antoine grinned. Sebastien snorted and rolled his eyes. “It’s nice to see you again, Seb. You just tend to disappear during the day. It makes me nervous that you might get…well…” Brianna made a slicing motion about her throat. Sebastien’s eyes widened. He had not thought about that. Brianna was right. She was not intelligent, but she was smart, for a woman. There was a slight admiration in his tone of voice when he responded. “Yes…yes you are absolutely right.” “We should all stick together then,” Antoine said buoyantly, slapping his brother on the back. “I hate you,” Sebastien replied sorely. Brianna giggled, sending shivers down Sebastien’s spine. It was the ice cream that made him shiver, he told himself. It was not the lilting sound of Brianna’s cute, little laugh. He felt his ears go red at the sound of Antoine’s uproarious laughter followed by Brianna’s little chorus. Sebastien’s eyes found the ice cream his hand but his tongue on his own wrist. Sebastien shook his head and quickly licked the ice cream before he made a spectacle of himself. “Well, Seb and I better take classes together from now on.” “And you should join Ceese and I in all our classes, just so we can keep an eye out for you. Sorta like body guards or something,” Brianna suggested. “That will become a nuisance quickly,” Antoine sighed. “Which one of you will make sure I’m not killed during my bath?” Brianna went into a fit of giggles to which Antoine grinned proudly. “Ohmigosh, we wouldn’t watch you that closely,” she replied breathlessly. “Mind your manners, Twon,” Sebastien remarked belatedly. “I am sure Brianna understands that I am joking, a nuance you have yet to pick up, brother of mine,” Antoine defended himself. Sebastien did not bother to reply. It was a stupid argument anyway. Brianna did have a point however. They would need protection now. Lucifer was somewhere.
Cecilia was debating whether or not to swallow her pride and join everyone for ice cream. It was just so easy to stay here in her room and pretend to understand what she was doing. Sebastien was wrong. It was not just about memorizing the formulas. She muttered to herself as she stiffly marched towards the commons. Her eyes were on her shoes again as she complained how rude and arrogant Sebastien behaved. How foolish Antoine was. But how even more foolish she had been for letting her guard down for a moment. Sebastien might have been an enjoyable escort to the dance, but she would refuse to go with him. She would not allow Antoine the honor either. Neither of those two were worthy. Besides, weren’t knights suppose to heed their lady’s whim? Help a damsel in distress? So what if it was a bunch of math problems and not a dragon that kept her trapped in her tower. “Excuse me, miss? Could you help me? I am trying to find the commons. I’m visiting, but I’ve lost my friends,” a lofty voice called out to her. Cecilia forgot to stop when she was addressed and ended up tripping over one of the crutches. “Oh dear, I am so sorry. Are you hurt?” “Just startled,” Cecilia replied, biting her lip. Gingerly she got to her feet again and faced the visitor. She had to lean back pretty far to see his face. He was very tall and very slight. His skin and hair were so pale she thought for a moment that he was an albino. But she took note of his eyes. One was blue but the other was a cattish gold. It was a startling face, young yet old, frightening yet oddly attractive. Cecilia felt shy suddenly. “A-are you okay? I didn’t hurt you or…” “I sprained my ankle that’s all. The nurse over-reacted and gave me these stupid crutches.” “Yeah…” Cecilia laughed insincerely. “The commons?” “Oh! Right, right! Sorry. Just too many things happened at the same time. It’s just this way. You’re looking for your friends right?” “I am not going to bother with them if they are not going to bother with me. By the way, what is your name?” “Oh, how silly of me. I’m Cecilia.” “Cecilia…does that have some meaning in your language?” “It’s Latin for dim-sighted,” Cecilia blushed. “You know some Latin then?” “A little. I don’t remember much from my classes. I’m trying to learn some other languages. What’s your name and where are you from?” “Luki…call me Luki.” “Is that a nickname?” “Yes, people are uncomfortable with my full name. It is rather controversial. But then again, so am I,” Luki smiled deviously. Cecilia grinned timidly.
They entered the commons together. Luki surveyed the crowd trying to pick out those faces. No one struck him as familiar. He grunted softly. “Huh, I thought Brianna would be here with those two…” Cecilia left her sentence unfinished. “Well, these are the commons. Hope you find your friends,” Cecilia waved and started to leave. Luki snatched her wrist, stopping her in her tracks. “You were abandoned by your friends as well?” “Actually, I didn’t really want to see them,” she blushed. Luki smiled mischievously, she would be fun to play with. “I like how you think, Cecilia. Join me. We can be friends for awhile.” Cecilia could hardly believe what she was hearing. Without thinking she agreed. It was hard to ignore the silent warning in the depths of her mind, but somehow she managed to and enjoyed light conversation with Luki.
Lucifer felt good how the day turned out. The girl, Cecilia, might become useful. He had a strong suspicion about her though. His elf-stone had reacted and his illusion nearly broke. It might be dangerous to be around her, but she was taken by him. There was no doubt to that. The girl was a shrew, but gullible. Cecilia would have to be the bait to lure out the knights. Antoine would lay down his life for a lady’s sake and Sebastien would try to protect his brother to save the crown. The girl would be their downfall.
Cecilia was bubbling with glee when she returned to her room. Brianna was not there, which was frustrating. She wanted to tell her right away. Cecilia prepared herself for a shower. There were no private showers open at the time, so she had to buckle down and use a stall shower. She did not take very long in the shower this time. The hot water was running low so she did not want to bother. She wrapped her hair in a towel and put on her robe to return to the room. She pause at her reflection in the mirror and sighed dismally. Another female student was drying her long hair. The young woman looked like a model for a shampoo ad in Cecilia’s eyes. Cecilia walked off before she was caught staring. Her good mood was ruined. How could she even consider that Luki liked her? He was just visiting friends anyway. There was no reason for him to take interest. But the way he spoke, the very sound of his voice was honey sweet to her memory. His hair that unnatural color and length lent to further tempt her eye. And those eyes…those terrifyingly beautiful eyes. They did not look abnormal on his face, they fit perfectly. Although one was pale blue and the other a cattish gold, it was right on him. On anyone else would have been a freak. “What are you sighing about now?” Brianna asked when Cecilia failed to notice her presence. “What? It’s nothing. Where were you guys?” “Antoine wanted to play basketball. I totally owned them! Sorry if you were waiting for us,” Brianna looked embarrassed. “That’s all right, I was busy. Any sign of you-know-who?” “We haven’t been looking really. But we did decide that Antoine and Seb should accompany at least one of us at all times during their stay. Just so one of them doesn’t end up missing without us knowing it right away.” Cecilia groaned, “I can’t spend every waking minute baby-sitting, Bree. You and I both have tests and projects due this week. And then that stupid dance. We have to pick up our dresses and if you’re taking a knight we better suit them up with a tux.” “I know it will be hard. And very inconvenient. But until we know where Lucifer is and find a way to stop him, we have to be very alert and watch out for each other,” Brianna argued. “I know, I know,” Cecilia muttered gingerly. “I’ll do my part. But I found a math tutor for the rest of the week. Next Wednesday is my big math final.” “Oh good, who’s your tutor?” Cecilia was now debating whether or not to tell Brianna about Luki. “Another student,” she answered and turned on her computer. That was their signal to end a conversation.
The next day, Cecilia was able to excuse herself from the Planning Committee to study with her tutor. She tried to hide her secret excitement to talk to Luki again. It did not really matter if he never thought her attractive, just spending time with him was enough for now. When she entered the empty classroom, she felt her former resilience melt away. Luki was more beautiful than she remembered. He no longer sported crutches, so he stood much taller. “You have arrived on time,” Luki remarked evenly. “Yes. You got here early,” Cecilia replied. Luki smiled coldly and pulled up the over-head screen to reveal the dry-erase board covered with problems. “We will start from the right and work our way left. Since you tell me you are better at art and literature, this will exercise your brain in a different way. And you said you had a gift for language, correct?” “Yes. You remembered?” “Good. You use the same part of your brain to learn languages as you do to solve math problems. But let’s not waste time with theory, let’s get to work. Please begin,” Luki ordered encouragingly. Cecilia picked up the marker and stared at the problem. The hormones had settled down now. Luki was much more mature than she gave him credit for. He was probably a university student. “Check your arithmetic!” Luki suddenly commanded. Cecilia obeyed without hesitation. Oops…she had ignored the negative sign. It took about an hour to finish all the problems on the board. “Good. You’ve done them correctly, but you’re slow. On your exam you will need to perform these quicker. Well, copy down your work on the board into your homework notes. Do you understand the concepts?” “It’s coming together,” Cecilia admitted. “My arithmetic slows me down. I’ve been bad at it since kindergarten.” “That will be impossible to repair I’m afraid. That memorization should have been sealed into your head then,” Luki remarked setting his hand on Cecilia’s head. A shiver ran down her spine and she felt her ears go red. Luki smirked to himself. “Are you embarrassed?” “Ah…ah…no…no. I just didn’t expect a pat on the head,” Cecilia forced a smile. She hated being touched by people she barely knew. But Luki might be an exception. “Sorry if I startled you then. It is no crime to be slow at math. If you were taught math poorly in the early stages of life, then it’s more difficult to progress.” “I know. Einstein flunked math.” Luki raised an eyebrow, not recognizing the name, but knew better than to ask about it. “Well, that’s enough for today. Are you meeting anyone for dinner?” Cecilia’s heart jumped into her throat. “N-not really. Why?” “I thought we could sit together again and talk about things other than math. If you worry too much about it you will have negative memories of what we just did and forget about it. The brain naturally suppresses negative memories,” Luki smirked. “Th-that sounds great. I’ll finish up here then.” “I shall wait.” Luki reclined on the teachers desk and stared out the window while Cecilia frantically copied her work. This could not be happening. Why did he pick her? Was fate playing another trick on her? This was not just another empty promise, was it? She could not shake the dreadful feeling. Her doubts drowned all the joy of a possible relationship with Luki. It could not be. It was stupid and not worth her time. She had those two knights to worry about and Brianna. And that assassin. What did he even look like? Well, she was pretty sure she could spot an elf out of a crowd.
“Where’s Cecilia? Wasn’t she going to join us? You told her about sticking together right?” Sebastien pressed at dinner. Antoine was too enthralled with his new favorite meal to listen to Sebastien’s bantering. Brianna looked just as confused and concerned. “I did tell her. She always eats dinner with me. Maybe she’s still in tutoring,” she shrugged. “Tutoring? What for?” “The math final. She’s really stressed about it. She wants high scores so she can get the scholarship towards her college.” “College?” “More school. There’s primary school, middle school, high school, then college. College you earn a degree…like a specialization. It’s…it’s like being an apprentice,” Brianna nodded, satisfied with her explanation. “Ah, why is she bothering with more school?” Sebastien inquired. “I think she wants to become a teacher or something, I dunno. She changes her mind about what to do all the time.” “You aren’t going to college are you?” “I am. I’m thinking about going into architecture or International studies. I’ve always wanted to move to a big city and work in business.” Sebastien looked bewildered, “I thought elves were the only ones who educated their females so much.” Brianna shook her head at Sebastien and smirked, “You don’t think girls can be educated.” Sebastien knew better than to reply to such a question. “That doesn’t matter. We need to find Cecilia.” “Why? She can take care of herself. It’s not like Lucifer would be after her,” Antoine argued with a mouthful. “She is very busy. Her classes are harder than mine,” Brianna said thoughtfully. “Still, it’s not good for her to work all the time.” “I concur. We don’t want her to be like Sebastien,” Antoine laughed. Sebastien rolled his eyes and distracted himself with a book.
Cecilia and Luki sat outside to eat. It was just warm enough to sit outside comfortably. Still, Cecilia was easily chilled. It took most of her concentration to keep warm. Luki talked at length about his travels and his school. It was as Cecilia suspected. Luki was much older and an early graduate. Why was someone so intellectual bothering to talk with her? She felt so unintelligent and immature. Cecilia enjoyed his company and his looks, but the knowledge that he was unattainable was too much to bear. “Are you cold?” “Wh-what?” “You’re shivering and I can hear your teeth chattering.” Cecilia flushed, “Oh, sorry.” “Why do you feel the need to apologize? It is not wrong to feel cold. I have a tendency to ignore the temperature, shall we eat inside?” Cecilia could only imagine what would happen if Brianna or the knights caught her with Luki. “I’d rather not eat inside.” “It’s warmer.” “There’s someone I’m trying to avoid”. “Ah, the truth at last. Tell me,” Luki said putting an arm around her shoulder. He was warm and comfortable, like a stuffed animal. Cecilia glanced up at his face to see if he was repulsed by her immaturity. “It’s these guys my roommate likes…” she began and complained about the knights until she found herself crying.
Luki brushed aside one of her tears. She had told him exactly what he needed to know. Cecilia was the perfect pawn and what was more, she trusted him so far. This Spring Formal that she spoke of…it was a celebration apparently. A feast, then a dance…it could work. A dance would be crowded and people would be close together. The knights would be distracted and not suspect an attack. There would be time to plan later. Now, he needed to keep Cecilia on his side. “You should not have to spend time with them if you do not want to. It was not your intention that they arrived when they did. You have enough to worry about with schoolwork alone. I tell you what, how would you like to spend more time with me. We can work on all your classes and keep you focused on finals. I mean…are these two jackasses worth sacrificing your academic career and possibly the rest of your life?” Cecilia could not believe what she was hearing. Luki was right. School came first. Why did Brianna not see the same? Luki, a guy she had only known a couple of days understood. Cecilia rubbed her eyes and nodded, consenting to Luki’s plan. “If your friends ask you anything,” Luki said. “Just tell them you’re seeing someone. And…if you don’t mind, I could be your escort to the dance.” Cecilia blinked in surprise. This could not be happening. Not to her. No one had ever taken notice of her. There had to be something behind this. She had to keep her defenses up, even for Luki. “Why…why would you want to escort me?” “Because you have potential,” Luki answered quickly and assuredly. “I have known other girls like you throw their lives away to some thick-headed clod. They could have had it all. They could have ruled nations. But they gave into the instinct to mate and were ruled instead. I would not take advantage of you. But if it is your wish to be on…who was it…Antoine?” “Yes…Antoine.” “You don’t want to hang off his arm, do you? And Sebastien does not respect you. You deserve better than that. Although, I suppose I may not be much better. After all, compared to the other students I look…freakish.” “No you don’t!” Cecilia said without thinking. “You…you look good. I…I think you’re handsome.” She could not believe what she was saying. It was true she thought him handsome, but to say that out loud? What was she doing? Luki smiled and his eyes shimmered. He must have suffered ridicule in his youth for his bi-colored eyes. “Thank you, Cecilia. I am glad I ran into you the other day.”
“Ceese? There you are. What are you doing here? Why didn’t you come down for dinner?” Brianna asked when she found Cecilia back in the room. Cecilia was smiling from ear to ear. She put down the hair dryer, “I ate out with my tutor. And then I decided to practice doing my hair for the dance.” “Cecilia, I thought you weren’t going to do your hair for the dance.” Cecilia’s smiling was betraying her. She giggled and shrugged, “Something changed.” “Oh my god! You…you’re not going to let one of the knights escort you?” “Someone else asked me.” “Oh my god! Oh my god! You’re tutor!?” Cecilia squealed girlishly and nodded. Brianna squealed with her and bounced happily. Suddenly she stopped. “Wait, what about Sebastien? He won’t have anyone to escort.” “He doesn’t really want to go anyway, right?” Cecilia said with disgust. “He can escort his own ego. Damn bastard.” “Ceese…are you angry at him?” “Yes! Holy crap, yes! That jerk had the nerve to insult my intelligence with his snobbish talk of math.” “He is rather…crude. Antoine and I were actually plotting to have me take him to the dance. Antoine is so devious…he thinks Seb is pretty rude too.” “I’m not going with Antoine either. My tutor asked me, and technically, neither of the knights asked me.” Brianna sighed, “I better ask one of them then. And we’ll have to find a date for the other one.” “There are plenty of “commoners” we can hook them up with to really grate the ‘nobility’s’ nerves,” Cecilia grinned wickedly. “Okay…I think I’ll take Seb. Twon said he’d help me shape him up. You think you could help a little.” “If it involves torture, count me in!” Cecilia laughed. Brianna joined her, “You’re so mean.” “Oh, by the way,” Cecilia said, remembering something. “I’ll be spending some time with my tutor for the rest of the week. I won’t be able to watch for the guys that much. I know this is a lot for you, but could you please, please, please let me hang out with him instead of those two guys. We can still go out for tuxes this weekend or something, but Bree…I think I’ve got a crush on this guy.” “Eeee, I’m so happy for you. I don’t mind too much. Do you mind if I tell them you found someone else?” “Please do and tell me how they react,” Cecilia said with a devious expression. “Of course!” Brianna promised.
